A rover needs to be lightweight in order for the lander to be able to land it properly on a planet or moon, but it needs to be robust so that it doesn't break while being used.
Airplane landing wheels can be used underneath the rover, with an action group, to increase the impact tolerance of the rover. If the rover ever gets airborne, deploying those wheels should help prevent the actual rover wheels from being damaged.
untested idea:
design the rover to have an advanced grabbing arm which will be able to grab a struct coming out of a lab processing module on landing wheels. This would allow me to drive the lab around and perform science, but also drop the lab processing module off if I just want to drive around.
